Indonesian young mountaineer Khansa Syahlaa shared her challenging experience during an expedition to Lenin Peak, which stands at 7,134 meters above sea level (MASL) in the Pamir Mountains, Kyrgyzstan.
The expedition was part of the 21st Anniversary of the Indonesian Mountaineering Federation (FMI), which carries the spirit of athlete development, achievement, and strengthening the presence of Indonesian climbers on the international stage.
Upon her return, Khansa was welcomed by the Indonesian Mountaineering Federation (FMI) as a form of appreciation for her perseverance and dedication in bringing Indonesia’s name to the international climbing arena.
The welcoming ceremony was attended by Chairman of FMI National Board, Major General (Ret.) TNI Mar Buyung Lalana, Secretary General dr. M. Iqbal El Mubarak, Sp.B, along with other members of the FMI National Board. The presence of FMI officials demonstrated their support and appreciation for Khansa’s struggle during the expedition in the Pamir Mountains.
Khansa described the expedition as both thrilling and extremely challenging. From the first day to the last, the team had to face snowstorms, extreme temperatures dropping to minus 27 degrees Celsius, and physically demanding terrain. The journey from Camp 1 to Camp 3 was almost constantly hit by storms, requiring extreme caution with every step.
“The journey was very exciting and very challenging, from the first day to the last. We were exposed to snow in freezing conditions and it was extremely exhausting,” said Khansa.
Although extreme weather conditions prevented the team from reaching the summit for safety reasons, Khansa successfully carried and raised the Indonesian Red and White Flag at an altitude of around 6,400 MASL, in the Pamir Mountains, Kyrgyzstan, as a symbol of Indonesia’s spirit and pride on the international climbing stage.
“We did not reach the summit due to the extreme conditions. But we are very proud for Indonesia — we still raised the Red and White Flag,” she said.
Khansa also expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, FMI, and all parties who supported her throughout the expedition.
“I am truly grateful to my friends, family, FMI, and all the committee members who were so supportive of this expedition,” Khansa said.
For Khansa, the journey was not only about reaching the summit, but also a valuable experience in facing extreme conditions. Raising the Red and White Flag at 6,400 MASL proves that the spirit of perseverance remains strong even in the face of harsh weather and high risks.
Although the summit was not reached, Khansa stated that her determination to try again remains. She hopes to undertake future expeditions and give her best for Indonesia.
“Insyaallah, we will keep trying and come back to give our best for Indonesia. Long live and glory to Indonesia,” Khansa Syahlaa concluded.
